Glowing Goddesses: A safe tan is a self-tan!

I've committed to a life of fairness - in regards to skin tone, anyway. The aftermath of sunbathing simply outweighs any benefit in my eyes. I don't want skin cancer, I don't want sun spots or sun damage and I don't want to look like a leather bag by the time I'm 50. However, I do not feel at all attractive when I'm pale. That works great for those with perfect porcelain skin, but I don't fall in that category.

To remedy the state of my emotions, over the years I have tried just about every self-tanner on the market - I am not exaggerating. From drugstore brands to over the top expensive, you just never know what you are going to get. Or at least that used to be the case. Self-tanning products have come a looooong way over the last few years and I want to help you take the guess work out of the plethora of options available, erring on the side of natural, of course.

St. Tropez Naturals

The Godmother of all tanning. St.Tropez delivers a quality color and ease of application with their mit and the bronze foam helps you know exactly where you have and haven't applied. That self-tanning smell that we all know you can smell a mile away is much more subtle here and the results are beautiful, glowing, bronzed, beach babe worthy. BUT did you know they have a Naturals line? I know, amazing. Same high-performance they are known for, still fool-proof but comprised of VEGETAN (a natural product) perfect for mamas-to-be, nursing mamas or those with sensitive skin (or those not partial to chemicals!) This line isn't as concentrated as the other ranges, but the subtle glow is perfect for daily use and comes in a lotion, milk mist and face cream. I'm sure pending the success of the line, they may add more products.

Tarte Brazilliance Self-Tanner

I am really loving just about everything Tarte has been putting out lately, but this has to be at the top (right along with their BB Cream and Finishing Powder). This gel-like bronze formula is super easy to apply (with included mit) and absorbs quickly. I didn't notice even a trace of a "tanner scent" even by the end of the day. The color develops in about 3 hours and it's the prettiest golden (NOT ORANGE) tan that looks so natural. I used it sparingly too, so a little goes a long way. Full of vitamin E and essential oils, without parabens, phthalates and sulfates.

Vita Liberata 2-3 Week Tanning Mousse

Yes. That was not a mistype. So first, let me say that Vita Liberta is an amazing luxury tanning line out of the UK who's products are non-toxic, organic, paraben free, alcohol free, and perfume free. They don't streak, don't smell and actually moisturize - so could something this good actually work? Um, yea! For as long as 2-3 weeks! Their newest product works with the PH of your skin, which is why they say 2-3 weeks because some will take better than others. To get such an amazing tan takes a little work - you apply it 3 days in a row BUT then you're good for weeks! I'd say it's definitely worth it and the color is absolutely gorgeous! For best results, treat it like a spray tan. Exfoliate before, don't moisturize and leave it on for 24 hours (if you can) to really let is soak in. When you do shower, don't scrub. Oh, and grab a cheap box of latex gloves for application, because a mit is not included, unless of course you already have one or eight because you buy too many tanning products (who would do that?!?) When the tan starts to fade, it's gradual and not at all obvious - have I sold you yet? Oh, and did I mention they now carry this at Sephora - yay! I hope you're already on your way!

Another phenomenal natural tan line is ECOTAN, check out my REVIEW and these other fine alternatives:

Josie Maran Argan Self-Tanning Body Wash

I absolutely want to love this! I do. I still have it in my shower hoping magically it will work! Or I'll somehow figure it out. I mean, how wonderful is the idea of washing on a tan? And a natural, fruit derived one at that! It smells like chocolate and the actual tan is the perfect color that doesn't look in the least bit fake - well, minus the streaks, water spots, uneven areas, etc. You're supposed to shower as usual, shut off the water while skin is damp, apply the product either with the provided loofa in a circular motion or latex gloves. Then, you rinse and voila! But the problem here is that where you first apply is always darkest and there is no way around this even if you are Speedy Gonzales! Then, a loofa is never going to distribute evenly and apparently neither is a hand while your skin is wet. And then... after waiting 30 seconds, when you rinse, obviously the shower is hitting you in one place, washing that spot harder and water is running everywhere and it just doesn't work. I will keep trying and let you know if there is a solution. Which is such a shame because the color is beautiful. Probably my favorite result, if it were even. Womp, womp. I'll just await a tanning lotion from her. I love her.

So pale no more ladies, take care of your skin and still look like a glowing goddess!  I promise, even when you're in your yoga pants doing mommy duty (or baby doodie), you'll feel so much better about yourself with a little color! And the great thing is, there are so many quality natural options!!!

*I'm sure I don't need to give the skin cancer speech, or God forbid the tanning bed speech, right ;)
